Knot Reference

Common knots, what they are for and how they behave under load.

Bowline

Fixed loop at the end of a line. Does not slip or bind, easy to untie after loading.

Clove hitch

Quick attachment to a post or rail. Adjustable, may slip under a changing load.

Figure-eight

Stopper knot that keeps a line from running out through a block or fairlead.

Sheet bend

Joins two ropes of different diameter; the thicker rope forms the bight.

Round turn and two half hitches

Secure mooring to a ring or post, can be tied under tension.

Trucker's hitch

Creates a 3:1 purchase for tightening a load down.
